The first months of COVID were memorable for all and even more so in northern Italy. Already in May 2020, when almost no-one could move, I had to cross the highway leading from Venice to Torino, called ‘autostrada della serenissima’. I realised only after my stop at one of the first Autogrill that what I see is a historic moment. These stopovers are usually buzzing from tourists, who sip their coffees and bite on their panini. There and then they were deserted: there was sometimes nobody, more often only one or two persons present. And so was this series born, taken along the way – hopefully not be possible to shoot ever again.
