Beijing in 2012
I visited Beijing in 2012, about a decade after China had joined the World Trade Organisation. Not knowing its past of future first hand, I can only remember the mix of seeming opposites. The silent electric scooters, the bikers carrying unbelievable objects, people living and working on the street, while other returning home to flats in houses separated from the rest of the world by entry points guarded by what appeared to be military personnel.
